The 30 canonical terms you will hear in any Product Ops conversation, organized by roles, frameworks, rituals, metrics, and artifacts.

Roles

Career Ladder
A documented progression of levels with expectations for scope, impact, and autonomy.
IC Track
The individual contributor progression that parallels the management track.
People Manager
A role accountable for hiring, developing, and performance-managing direct reports.
Product Operations
The function that builds and runs the operating system for a product organization.
Product Operations Manager
Individual contributor who owns a product operating system for one product line.

Frameworks

OKR
Objectives and Key Results, a goal-setting framework pairing a qualitative objective with 2-5 quantitative key results.
Outcome Over Output
A principle that product success is measured by customer outcomes, not shipped features.
Product Trio
A collaboration model where a PM, an engineering lead, and a designer make product decisions together.
RACI
A responsibility assignment model, Responsible, Accountable, Consulted, Informed, applied to decisions or deliverables.
RICE Scoring
A prioritization framework using Reach x Impact x Confidence / Effort.
Three-in-a-Box
A leadership pattern pairing a PM, engineering lead, and design lead as co-owners of an area.

Process

Continuous Discovery
A weekly rhythm of customer interviews coupled with continuous idea generation and testing.
Discovery Track
The parallel workstream where a team investigates problems before committing to delivery.
Feedback Loop
The pipeline that takes customer signal from source to product decision.
GA Launch
General availability, the point at which a product or feature is available to all customers.
Hiring Bar
The documented level of competence required for a hire in a specific role.
Interview Loop
The sequence of interview rounds a candidate goes through to receive an offer.
Ramp Plan
A staged rollout plan that progressively enables a product or feature for larger audiences.
Stage Gate
A go/no-go checkpoint that an initiative must pass before advancing to the next phase.

Rituals

Listening Tour
A structured set of stakeholder conversations a new leader runs in their first 30-60 days.
Offsite
A structured 1-3 day working session, usually off-campus, for strategy, planning, or alignment.
OKR Cadence
The rhythm of drafting, committing, checking in on, and retroing OKRs, typically quarterly.
Post-Mortem
A blameless structured review of an incident or failure to extract learnings.
Quarterly Planning
The cross-functional ritual where a product org sets themes, OKRs, and investments for the next quarter.
Retrospective
A structured team session to inspect past work and identify changes for next time.

Metrics

Activation
The point at which a new user reaches a threshold of product usage that predicts retention.
North Star Metric
The single metric a product team optimizes toward, aligned with customer value.

Artifacts

3 terms
Job Description
A written role definition covering responsibilities, requirements, level, and compensation.
Stakeholder Map
A visual inventory of every stakeholder affecting a product decision, grouped by influence and interest.
Three-Horizon Roadmap
A Now/Next/Later roadmap format that communicates intent without committing to dates.
